“WE IS THE NEW THEM.” Fellow Coaches, for those of you who have been around for a while, there was always an US/THEM mentality when it came to the relationship between USA Boxing National and LBCs. Historically, there were occasional questions regarding communication, transparency and even trust. Those days are long gone. The new USA Boxing is a great USA Boxing! Executive Director Mike McAtee, President John Brown and Membership Director Lynette Smith are all great boxing people as well as the entire National Staff. They know what needs to be done at the Grassroots level and they do their best to make it happen.
This inaugural letter from the Coaches Commission is to open channels between the Coaches, the Commission and USA Boxing National office. I have been to a fair share of Regional and National events and have seen some of the greatest Coaches in boxing at those events. Every event I go to, I pay attention and watch the unique style of every Coach. We all have something to offer and we all have something to learn. Aside from the visual pointers we are able to take, USA Boxing also offers many resources to sharpen your skills, not the least of which being the USA Boxing website. In fact, we have an entire section dedicated just to us Coaches.
For any new Coach, go to the Coaches Page of the website (in the top navigator find Coaches and Officials > Coaches). If you scroll down to the bottom of the page, you will find a chart. On that chart is an abundance of links to helpful information. The Grassroots Manual (Best Practices) is a great guide for the novice and experienced Coach alike. Open that and view a chapter or two. Keep in mind that USA Boxing must constantly update, modify and improve their Coaching Certification programs to keep up with Olympic, AIBA civil and public demands. Some of us look at this as a plague; others embrace it as a learning tool. Regardless, “change is gonna happen.”
The Coaches Commission is jam-packed with great Coaches from numerous LBCs from different parts of the Country. The Commission’s job is to assist the LBCs with providing information to Coaches and addressing problems that may arise in your LBC. We will be submitting an article monthly from different members of the Commission. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have a Coaching issue in your LBC that needs to be addressed.
